    Find answers to your queries

    Learn all about university jargon

If you are about to enter university or have been there for a short time, there are some basic concepts that you should be aware of.

In this video we will explain the most common ones: bachelor’s degrees, double degrees, ECTS credits, Deusto degrees, specialisations, dual degrees, honour loans, etc.

    Studying at Deusto

    Course structure

The course syllabus consists of four main interrelated modules, aimed at providing in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of the teaching profession. At Deusto we have designed it to provide the right balance between:

    • Theory and practice
    • Tradition and innovation
    • Research and professional development.

This will enable you to work as a school teacher and to continue learning throughout life.

    null

    Core subjects

    • This module is carried out in your 1st and 2nd years.
    • It consists of 10 subjects.
    • It will provide you with an understanding of the psychology of the individual and learning, school organisation and curricular projects, and the relationship between school and society, family and culture.
    null

    Teacher training

    • This is the most extensive module and is carried out at all levels of the degree.
    • It consists of 17 subjects.
    • It will provide you with theoretical and practical training in the areas of knowledge that are taught in Primary Education: mathematics, languages, environmental awareness, plastic arts, music, physical education, etc. The aim is to master these areas of knowledge and know how to plan their learning appropriately.
    null

    Practicum

    • This module is completed in the third and fourth year of study.
    • It consists of 3 subjects.
    • This is the most important module in this undergraduate programme. It focuses on direct contact with schools, teacher training and in-depth research of schools, learning and assisting Primary Education students.
    null

    Specialisations

    • This module is completed in 3rd and 4th years.
    • It consists of 5 subjects.
    • You will specialise in one of the educational areas in Primary Education (Therapeutic Pedagogy or Foreign Language: English on the Bilbao campus / Hearing and Speech or Physical Education on the San Sebastian campus).

A practical and dynamic learning method

    Deusto learning model (MAUD)

    01

    Experiential context

We know that we learn from experience. Therefore, at Deusto, our starting point is students’ previous knowledge.

    02

    Reflective observation

Once these preliminary outlines have been established, it is essential to observe them and also to question them.

    03

    Conceptualisation

We compare our previous knowledge with written theory on the subject.

    04

    Active learning

Learning needs not only to understand that theory but to put it into practice. To this end, activities, exercises, practices, projects and/or research work are carried out, where each student applies different skills.

    05

    Assessment

Finally, the assessment process involves reflection on what the student has learned and evaluation of the work completed.

    LIVING AND STUDYING ABROAD

    INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

In third year, students who meet the academic and language requirements can access an international mobility experience for either a full year or half a year. Thus, in addition to gaining knowledge of another culture, you will learn to adapt to new situations and develop your language skills.

Within the mobility programmes we can highlight the ERASMUS + (international mobility) and SICUE (national mobility) programmes.

    UNDERGRADUATE FINAL YEAR PROJECT

    DEMONSTRATE WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT

In the second semester of the 4th yearº you will defend your Undergraduate or Final Degree Project in public . This is a report or original study (8 ECTS) that you will have to carry out personally under the supervision of a tutor, who will guide you and facilitate your learning.

In this way, you will be able to demonstrate everything you have learnt during the four years of your degree. The Faculty of Education and Sport will determine the themes of the project, taking into account the nature of the degree in Primary Education. Examples might include:

    • School organisation: the school and the classroom.
    • Relationship between the centre, families and social environment.
    • The primary school curriculum
    • Curriculum planning
    • Continuing education, innovation and improvement.
    • The role of the teacher
    • Educational intervention.
    • Student participation and engagement in the classroom.
