The University of Deusto will be the starting point for discussing ideas and global solutions, the main objective of the MUN Bilbao 2024 Conference, on Thursday 25 January 2024 at 17:30. This international event, organised by the students of the Ayalde and Munabe schools of the COAS Educational Group, will bring together 360 young people from 8 countries, who will take part in a UN simulation.
Diversity is at the heart of MUN Bilbao 2024 as schools from Spain, France, the United States, England, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Kuwait will be taking part. Students will spend four days tackling critical issues on the UN agenda, recreating the workings of various bodies, including the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Human Rights Council and, most notably, the Arctic Council, which will have its own conference.
After the opening session at Deusto's Ceremonial Hall, the Conference will continue at Ayalde School, where these young leaders will debate intensely on 26, 27 and 29 January, proposing and approving resolutions that will be sent to the UN headquarters in New York. This year, special emphasis will be given to current conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Gaza Strip between Israelis and Palestinians. Hence, the opening session will feature a string quartet reminding us of the importance of peace in the world.
María Díaz de la Cebosa, president of the Robert Kennedy Human Rights Foundation in Spain, an organisation committed to social justice and human rights through educational programmes, will also participate in the opening session. Drawing on Robert F. Kennedy's figure she will seek to inspire young people to become aware of the importance of human rights and actively join the wave of change for peace and social justice he advocated.
Also speaking at the event will be the secretary general of MUN Bilbao 2024, student Ane Irene Antón; the Vice-Rector for the University Community and Agenda 2030, Aitziber Irigoras; the councillor of Bilbao City Council, Iñigo Zubizarreta; the Director of Polar Aspect Norwich, Anthony Speca; the educational coordinator of COAS, Tania Santiago; and 6 ambassadors of MUN Bilbao representing countries in armed conflicts.
The MUN Bilbao Conference is jointly organised by the Basque Government, the Bilbao City Council, the University of Deusto and the COAS educational group.
