Michael E. Porter, new Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Deusto

The scientific merits of this North American academic and his important contribution to the theories of strategic management, economic development, the cluster theory and the analysis of innovation systems are the main reasons to confer this Honorary degree upon professor Porter. The honorary degree ceremony was held last 18 May in the Loiola Centrum at the San Sebastian campus.

Internationally renowned for his research work in the business and economics area, he is the author of 17 books and over 125 articles. He has received numerous awards and honours, distinctions and prizes. Michael Porter has served as a strategy advisor to business and government and, in this sense, he has maintained close ties with the Basque Government and also with the University of Deusto for years, thanks to the agreements reached between the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration- ESTE in San Sebastian and the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness ?ISC. The ISC is a leading centre worldwide, created by Michael Porter in 2001, andbased at Harvard Business School.
During the ceremony, the Vice-Rector at the San Sebastian campus, José María Guibert, presented the honorand and delivered the Laudatory speech, where he described Michael Porter?s professional career and his advances in three core fields: competitiveness and business strategy; competitiveness and economic development; and competitiveness and society. In addition, the University of Deusto has created the new Basque Institute of Competitiveness, as an initiative which follows very much the same line of thinking of this new doctor.
The closing address of this formal university ceremony was given by the President of the Basque Government, Juan José Ibarretxe. During this ceremony the traditional university awards were conferred: the medal as an emblem and sign of his membership of the University of Deusto; the ring as an emblem of the privilege granted for signing and sealing, and symbol of the union with science; the Book as a sign of the Science that "you are to disseminate and disclose"; and the laureate cap, an old and venerated symbol of teaching and a traditional award conferred by the academic world for work carried out.
