The University of Deusto’s Engineering Faculty will be hosting the 11th Ada Byron Award for Women Technologists on Thursday, 25 January at 10:00 am, featuring the last two winners of the Ada Byron Award as keynote speakers. This award, which has become a national benchmark, highlights women's work in the fields of science, technology and engineering, while also seeking to encourage women's vocations in the R&D field. The deadline for submitting applications for the two categories (general and aged under 35 years old) is 26 April.
Starting with this eleventh award, and following a strategic reflection, the scientific-technological committee has made some changes for the assessment of candidates so as to give greater prominence to their career in the business world. In this regard, the management positions held, and the tasks and contributions they have made in the business world are included as an evaluation criterion to ensure that the final assessment is more balanced with the score given to the academic-research profile.
The award is sponsored by the Provincial Council of Biscay, Emakunde - Basque Women's Institute, Danobatgroup and has the collaboration of Innobasque and Innolab. In addition to the Spanish award, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Deusto has five other awards in five countries in the Americas: Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia and Chile and is working to extend it to Brazil.
Two scientists face to face
At the presentation of the award, astronaut Sara García Alonso (Ada Byron Youth Award 2023) and software engineering specialist María José Escalona (Ada Byron Award 2023) will talk about "The present and the future of technology" in a talk open to the public while places are still available. They will present different success stories, bringing us closer to the use of technology in the business and social sphere.
The event, which has the support of Innolab Bilbao, will be held at the Deusto Auditorium and will be attended, among others, by the Rector of the University of Deusto, Juan José Etxebarria; the Regional Minister for Equality, Justice and Social Policies, Nerea Melgosa; the Deputy for Employment, Inclusion and Equality of the Provincial Council of Biscay, Teresa Laespada; and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Asier Perallos.
