On Friday, 18 January, the University of Deusto hosted the Basque Country’s 1st Philosophy Olympiad, aimed at all Basque ESO and Bachillerato students and in which over 150 students participated in its various categories: dissertation, dilemma, photography and video on the topic: “REALITY AND APPEARANCE IN TODAY’S WORLD”.
The results of the Basque edition and the prize presentation ceremony will be held at the University of Deusto next March. The winners will have the opportunity to take part in the national Philosophy Olympiad, which will be held in Malaga on 29 April.
The Philosophy Olympiad was created in 2013 by several associations and the regional Olympiads, which the Basque Country will also join this year 2019, was in turn promoted by a group of philosophy teachers, both from secondary and university education, who have been actively collaborating in the various initiatives aimed at encouraging secondary and bachillerato students to become initiated in philosophical reflection. They have the support of the Spanish Philosophy Network (REF), the University of Deusto, the Basque Country University, the Philosophy Graduate Association and Agora Basque Philosophy Association.
These activities included two training workshops to prepare for the 1st Olympiad that were held in October and December 2018 at the University of Deusto, which were attended by over 140 students from educational establishments across the Basque Country.
The coordinating bodies included this initiative within in the FILOSOFIABAI campaign to contribute to further dissemination of the Philosophy Olympiad, which had the collaboration of important figures from several spheres: artists, musicians, film makers, sportspeople, etc. In this way, the aim has been not only to arouse curiosity and interest in the Olympiad itself, but also to bring critical thinking closer to society through our social networks and draw attention to the need to give philosophical knowledge the place it deserves on the educational curriculum.
