The Faculty of Theology of the University of Deusto will hold its traditional Theology Conference on March 25, 26 and 27, which this year will focus on the theme “Theology and Artificial Intelligence”. The meeting seeks to reflect on the ethical, anthropological and theological implications of this technology, as well as its challenges and opportunities for progress, the common good and the Christian vision of the human being and the world. A new scenario that theology must understand in order to adapt the Christian message.

The program, in face-to-face and online format, includes seminars, aimed at people with theological training, and round tables open to the public. The activities will open on March 25, at 17:00 hours in the Garate Hall, with the round table entitled “Artificial Intelligence: contributions and challenges to the human condition”, moderated by María José Schultz, from the Faculty of Theology, with the participation of experts from different disciplines of the University of Deusto, who are part of the Artificial Intelligence Commission of the University of Deusto (IAUD).  Among them are Andoni Eguiluz, from the Faculty of Engineering; Olga del Orden, from Deusto Business School; Francisco Javier Martínez, from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences; and Eusebio Pérez, from the Faculty of Theology.

On the second day, March 26, Sara Lumbreras Sancho, from Comillas Pontifical University, will give the seminar “The identity of the human being in the light of artificial intelligence” in the morning. In the afternoon, at 5:00 p.m. in the Churruca Hall, she will give the conference “Artificial intelligence and Christian humanism”, in which she will ask whether the development of AI will contribute, like other technological advances, to improving human conditions, or whether, on the contrary, it is a risky and uncertain step with consequences for freedom, dignity and human uniqueness.

Finally, on March 27, in the morning, the seminar “The plural impact of artificial intelligence on theology” will be given by Lluis Oviedo Torró, of the Pontificia Università Antonianum of Rome and the Franciscan Theological Institute of Murcia, who, in the afternoon, at 5:00 pm in the Churruca Hall, will give the conference “Artificial intelligence: challenges to the Christian vision of the person”. In his talk, he will address the need to understand in depth the challenges of AI in order to be able to adapt the Christian message to the new technological environments, with special attention to the so-called “problem of alignment”, considered by many as the great question that arises with AI.
