Enjoy Bilbao

Bilbao is the heart of a metropolitan area with more than one million inhabitants. Since its foundation more than 700 years ago, it has been themain socio-economic driving force behind the modernisation process in the province of Biscay.

As an expression of Basque culture and its spirit, we must not forget the manifestations of traditional culture such as pilgrimages and popular festivals, Basque sports, traditional folklore, etc. Bilbao's Semana Grande ('Aste Nagusia’), which is celebrated for nine days starting on 15 August, is particularly noteworthy.

Special mention should be made of the gastronomy in the Basque Country, which is renowned for having set the foundations of culinary tradition. The excellent food and local drinks like 'Txakoli' are a highlight themselves.

Bilbao is about 20 minutes by underground from Ereaga beach and 30 minutes from Arrietara and Atxabiribil beaches in Sopelana. By underground, you can even reach the fishing village of Plentzia.
