Leisure, Culture and Communication for Human Development

    Research areas

This research area is led by the Leisure and Human Development Research Team, attached to the Institute of Leisure Studies of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the University of Deusto, which has more than 20 years of experience, and is backed by a large number of research projects.

Culture and Communication, which encompasses the following research sub-areas:

    • Basque Language and Culture
    • Communication
    • Language Study
    • European Integration.

The aim is to analyse and assess the different fields of  Basque culturein relation to this community’s lifestyles and thought, with special emphasis on the present.

Analysis of the challenges posed by the Communication Society in its different realms, from the arrival of new communication technologies and their cultural impact to the incorporation of new communication strategies in different institutions, firms and their social impact. It also focuses on media discourse analysis- and the values contained therein-, concerning today’s key issues (gender, identity and political change); all of which are approached from the perspective of predicting new social gaps and developing our capacity to act with critical awareness.

This research area mainly focuses on the study of language in its oral, written and hypermodal forms. Research carried out in recent years has focused on the study of the Basque and Spanish languages in the Basque Country. Work related to learning second languages such as English or Chinese has also been undertaken. The team has specialised in two areas of linguistic study: the experimental phonetic description and analysis of the written language in corpus and documents.
