On November 25th we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, day reminiscent of the Mirabal sisters; persecuted, tortured and murdered by the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic.

In 1981 the First Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Meeting was held in Bogotá, Colombia where was decided to mark the 25 of November as the International Day of Non Violence Against Women, recalling the murder of the Mirabal sisters.

In 1993 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, where the "violence against women" is defined as: Any act of violence based on gender which has the potential outcome or actual physical, sexual or psychological harm, including threats, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public life or in private life. In the mentioned Assembly was recognised that "a clear statement of the rights to be applied to ensure the elimination of all violence against women in all its forms, and a commitment by States and the international community are needed to eliminate violence against women".

After the demonstrations against all types of men´s violence on the 7N, people continue in the streets demanding a change in policies and a commitment to the whole society to end sexist violence.

In Bilbao, the Demonstration for the Elimination of Violence against Women organised by Bilboko Coordinadora Feminista will take place on the 25 of November at Plaza Arriaga at 19:30
