Pedestrians commit 76% of the traffic offences at a risk of being hit by vehicles

76% of the traffic offences involving the risk of being hit by a vehicle, like crossing on the red light or at a non-pedestrian crossing, are committed by pedestrians, according to a survey carried out by Deusto Foundation for the Department for Transport of the Basque Government. As for drivers, who are responsible for 24% of the remaining actions considered to be dangerous, the most usual offence is failing to stop at pedestrian crossings. The profile of those hit by a vehicle in Basque streets and roads, resulting in people killed or seriously injured, corresponds to a working day, in daylight, during good weather, on dry roads, and it involves a single pedestrian or a group and a male driver with less than one hour at the wheel.
