The University of Deusto launches its own Business School

The University of Deusto has presented the first prestigious business school in the Basque Country, Deusto Business School (DBS) at three different venues: Madrid, Bilbao and San Sebastian. This School is backed up by Deusto's hallmark and, according to the Chairman of its Board of Directors and Chief Executive of BSCH, Alfredo Sáenz, it is born with the aim of becoming 'a reference point in Spain, and one of the top ten business schools in Europe for executive education worldwide'.

Deusto Business School has adopted 'Innovation through knowledge' as its motto and inspiration, since nowadays knowledge has become critical to growth and success in today's competitive business world.The School will place a special emphasis on those issues related to innovation management, financial services, human development and social responsibility, through a wide range of programmes. These include:

The progressive alliances between DBS and other foreign business schools and universities like Oxford, Georgetown or Insead, and numerous national and international companies will influence the design of Masters programmes, as well as the development of specialised executive programmes and customised in-company courses. Their methods combine both theoretical models and practical applications within a context of great intellectual, cultural and language wealth.

During the presentation of Deusto Business School on 3 April at the Madrid Stock Exchange, a discussion was held on ?Women and Innovation?, where five leading professionals in the Spanish economic sphere took part:Belén Amatriaín (General Manager of Telefónica), Ana Patricia Botín (Chairwoman of Banesto), Cristina Garmendia (Chairwoman of Genetrix), Antonio Catalán (Chairman of AC Hotels), and Pedro Luis Uriarte (Chairman of the Basque Agency for Innovation-Innobasque).

This School is backed up by the hallmark of the University of Deusto, synonymous with rigour and professionalism; by a powerful network of companies, institutions and alumni that support it; by an Advisory Board made up of scholars and managers from top-level Business Schools, and by a Board of Directors where some of the leading figures in the corporate world take part such as Alfredo Sáenz, Alejandro Echevarría, José Ignacio Goirigolzarri, Xavier de Irala, Juan María Nin and Juan Hoyos, among others.

The first programmes at Deusto Business School will start next Autumm.The new School will be located on the last floor of the University building designed by Rafael Moneo next to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; and at another location especially fitted out for the School in the historical building of La Comercial, the cradle of generations of business people.In addition, a three-floor building will be built at the San Sebastian campus for the exclusive use of the School.According to the Director of Deusto Business School, Ramón O'Callaghan, all these new resources and facilities are intended to 'facilitate learning and the sharing of experiences among participants'.

Presentations in Bilbao and San Sebastian

On Thursday, 3 April, the President of the Basque Government Juan José Ibarretxe presented the School in Bilbao in a ceremony that was attended by Professor John E.Ettlie, Director of the Technology Management Center, Rochester Institute of Technology. He gave a lecture entitled The Role of Business Schools in the Evolving Global Innovation Management Agenda.On Friday, 4 April, DBS was presented in San Sebastian, with a breakfast meeting at the Maria Cristina Hotel.
