On 7 November, the Parliament of the Canary Islands hosted a working seminar organised by the Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies (CALRE), aimed at raising awareness of the "migrant crisis" affecting the archipelago. The event brought together prominent experts to analyse various aspects related to the Migration and Asylum Pact, its regulatory development, and the protection of the rights of minors and adults in vulnerable situations within the European Union.
Among the speakers was Joana Abrisketa Uriarte, Associate Professor of International Law and European Union Law at the University of Deusto and a member of the Human Rights Institute. Her presentation, alongside other specialists, highlighted the need to ensure a human rights-based approach in migration and welfare policies, emphasising the crucial role of NGOs and other actors in protecting migrants.
The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, reminded attendees that the Chamber took leadership of CALRE's migration working group to raise awareness of the migration realities in the Canary Islands and provide technical and legislative proposals to European institutions. "This is a high-quality technical seminar aimed at enriching the debate on migration policy, which is a matter of deep concern to us," Pérez stated.
The closed-door event also featured contributions from experts such as Claudia María Hofmann, Professor of European Social Law; Cheik Tidiane Diop, intercultural mediator; Lucas Pérez, Professor of International Private Law; and David Melián, a legal expert on migrant children in transit, among others.
