Yesterday, Tuesday, 29 October, the Institute hosted a seminar at the University of Deusto, where experts examined the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the situation in Gaza from an international law and human rights perspective. The event brought together leading academics and humanitarian practitioners from various institutions.

Gorka Urrutia, Director of the Institute, opened the event and introduced Carmen López Alonso, Emeritus Professor of the History of Thought at the Complutense University of Madrid, and Mariano Aguirre, international affairs analyst and member of Chatham House in London. Both offered an in-depth perspective on the historical and political context of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Next, Pascale Coissard from Doctors Without Borders and Bárbara Ruiz, representative of UNRWA Euskadi, shared their insights into the humanitarian situation in Gaza, prompting a discussion with attendees about the challenges in the field.

The following sessions began with a presentation on international justice by Antonio Remiro Brotons, Professor of International Law at the Autonomous University of Madrid, who analysed the rulings of the International Court of Justice on the conflict. Joana Abrisketa, professor at Deusto Law School, explained the role of the International Criminal Court, and Felipe Gómez Isa delved into the human rights situation and the alleged genocide in Gaza.

The event concluded with a discussion featuring Antonio Remiro Brotons, Carmen López Alonso, and Mariano Aguirre, along with Julen Martínez Arbulu representing Students of Deusto for Palestine. This seminar, open to the public, provided a space for critical reflection on the challenges and future perspectives of the conflict, from the standpoint of international law and human rights.
