In the framework of the Horizon 2020 European Data Incubator project (EDI), the University of Deusto is hosting the second phase of the project’s incubation process. The objective of the EDI project, led by DeustoTech, is to encourage the creation and development of new Big Data companies with the view of making Europe a benchmark in the field. In this sense, and after concluding the first project phase in Berlin, in which 16 startups were selected, EDI comes to Bilbao to accompany and support these 16 young companies from all over Europe (Latvia, Turkey, UK, Germany, etc). The kick-off of this second phase takes place on 5 November 2018 and will conclude in February 2019. In the words of the project coordinator, the researcher Diego López-de-Ipiña “this is a very motivating and demanding challenge, since it is not easy to coordinate 16 startups, and build trust between them and the big companies that have contributed with their data to the project”. During these four months, structured around three work sessions in Bilbao, the selected startups will have the opportunity to get trained in different subjects, as well as to experiment with the data that large European companies have made available to the consortium. All this, with the aim to solve the technological challenge and/or business strategy that these companies have proposed to the selected startups. To finance this experimentation, startups will count with a financial support of up to € 100,000 from the European Union, which will be disbursed in function of the completion of a series of milestones during the process. Likewise, the University of Deusto, through DeustoTech, will provide participant startups with the infrastructure and support to carry out this experimentation. In addition, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit of the University of Deusto, will provide advice on business development and search for financial support to participating companies. For further information, please consult the project webpage.
In February, the 6 startups that will go to the next and final phase of EDI will be known. The finalists will present their projects and solutions to a panel of European experts and investors in Berlin.
