The University of Deusto will host next Saturday, February 22, the regional phase of the Olympiad on the European Union, organized in Euskadi by the youth association Equipo Europa. The event, which has the collaboration of the Faculty of Law and Europa Direct Bizkaia, will be attended by Begoña Pedrosa, Minister of Education of the Basque Government; José Ramón Intxaurbe, Dean of the Faculty of Law; and Idoia Mendía, MEP.
Students aged between 15 and 16 years old from 4th ESO, 1st Baccalaureate or 1st Intermediate Level, selected by their schools, will participate in this initiative that aims to deepen their knowledge of the European institutions and elections. The test of the Olympiad consists of writing a critical essay answering the question: “Why is it important to participate in the European elections?”.
The essays will be evaluated by a jury made up of professors from the University of Deusto, a representative of Europe Direct and another from Equipo Europa. The school that obtains the best score will compete in the national phase, to be held from April 19 to 21 at the University of Oviedo, where the winner will be decided at the state level. The winning team will get a trip to Brussels to get to know the European institutions.
Equipo Europa is a Europeanist, non-partisan and non-profit association formed by young people between 14 and 30 years old committed to the values of the European Union. Its purpose is to promote electoral participation in the European elections and to promote knowledge about the EU, whose decisions directly affect citizens, including Spanish youth. Currently, the association has more than 4,000 members nationwide.
One of its main activities is the organization of this Olympiad, for which it offers reinforcement talks given by volunteers in order to encourage participation in this event. In addition to fostering critical thinking, communication and knowledge about the European Union, the Olympiad provides students with a unique learning and reflection experience. Collaboration with institutions such as the University of Deusto brings recognition, prestige and educational development opportunities for both schools and participants.
