On December 4, the University of Deusto held a ceremony to recognize all the people, companies and entities that have made the Deusto Arrupe Scholarships possible. Since its creation in 2021, these scholarships have had a direct impact on the lives of more than 76 students from 14 degrees, who thanks to this initiative that overcomes socioeconomic barriers and fosters talent, can study at Deusto at no cost.
Specifically, in these years, with the commitment of 213 individual donors and 7 organizations, 630,000 € has been raised, a figure that reflects the power of solidarity and the importance of investing in education. In the spirit of Father Arrupe, after whom these grants are named, the University will continue to work so that more young people can have access to an excellent education. Because talent is everywhere, but opportunities are not always available.
For all these reasons, as Rector Juan José Etxeberria expressed, this meeting is not only an act of recognition, “but an invitation to look to the future with hope and to reaffirm the commitment to a transformative educational project that honors the values of the University of Deusto and the Ignatian tradition”.
He thanked the donors and companies for their generosity, for trusting in the power of education, in the talent of young people and in their ability to change the world. “Your generosity is an act of faith in people, especially in those who, although lacking sufficient resources, have the talent, strength and courage to fight for their dreams,” he said.
He also had a few words for the scholarship students who, he said, are “the heart of this project and the reason that gives meaning to all this effort”. He made it clear to them that their effort and dedication are the best response to the support received and encouraged them to take this opportunity with pride and to give back to society what they have achieved, “becoming in the future who will inspire the next generations to move forward and dream big”. Because, as St. Ignatius of Loyola said, love must be put more in deeds than in words and among all of you “you have given a living testimony of this love”. Words of the Rector.
