Invisible Film in Deusto

26 September 2024

Bilbao Campus

Within the framework of the International Invisible Film Festival ‘Film Socialak’ in Bilbao, which is taking place from 10 to 17 October, the Pedro Arrupe Human Rights Institute is pleased to invite you to a screening of the documentary Lehen Saiakera, scheduled for 11 October at 11:30 in Sala Garate.

Synopsis:

Lehen Saiakera offers an insightful portrayal of the human rights violations occurring at the Basque border along the Bidasoa River, between Irun and Hendaye, due to racially profiled and discriminatory migration controls on what is supposed to be an internal, border-free zone within the European Union. In recent years, these violations have led to the deaths of nine people. The documentary underscores the urgent need for society to stop turning a blind eye to this issue.

The film is narrated through bertsos by Amets Arzallus and features the special participation of members from various organizations and social movements that support migrants as they cross the border, defending the right to freedom of movement and advocating for the border to serve as a bridge, not a barrier.

After the screening, a discussion will be held with the participation of:

  • Marina Perosanz, director of Lehen Saiakera
  • Abdoulaye Sarr, SOS Racismo Gipuzkoa
  • Ion Aranguren, Irungo Harrera Sarea
  • Gustavo de la Orden Bosch, moderator (researcher at the Pedro Arrupe Human Rights Institute)

We encourage you to attend this event and join us in reflecting on human rights at the border and the role we, as a society, can play in addressing these issues.
