Nerea has a professional career as an urban planner, having worked in various companies and agencies in London and the Basque Country. She has been part of multidisciplinary teams for the development of Masterplans in the Middle East, England and Ireland, and has worked in various fields of urban consultancy. She currently combines her academic career with urban innovation and strategic planning projects, in collaboration with professionals in the field, always seeking to promote sustainable and people-centred urban development.

Nerea is an architect, specialising in Urban Planning from the University of Navarra, with a Master's degree in International Planning and Sustainable Development from the University of Westminster (London). She has recently defended her doctoral thesis ‘Urban living labs: governance for sustainable human development. Comparative analysis in European contexts of urban regeneration’, with a distinction cum laude, at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the University of Deusto. As a researcher, she is part of the team of the Katedra Deusto Cities Lab, a trans-disciplinary ecosystem that pursues, through research projects, learning programmes and open innovation actions, the transformation of cities through 360º governance of cities. In addition, Nerea is involved in the European alliance UNIC, and is the local director of UNIC - Centre for City Futures, a centre for the promotion of local innovation ecosystems between the university and local stakeholders, with the aim of tackling local challenges in a collaborative way and putting people at the centre of the process. In terms of teaching, Nerea is the local director of the Erasmus Mundus RePIC (Re-designing the Post-Industrial City) Master's Degree, taught by the 8 European universities of the UNIC alliance. She also teaches undergraduate courses on the Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz campuses.
