jgomeze@deusto.esJuan Carlos Gomez-Esteban, MD, PhD, is the coordinator of the Neurodegenerative Diseases Group, Biocruces Health Research Institute, (Baracaldo, Spain); lecturer in the Neurosciences Department, University of the Basque Country; and consultant with the Movement Disorders and Vegetative Nervous System Disorders Unit at the Cruces University Hospital. He received his degree in medicine and general surgery from the University of the Basque Country, taking a specialism in neurology at the Cruces University Hospital and completed his PhD in Neurosciences at the above university in 2008. He was later a postdoctoral fellow at the Autonomic Centre, New York University in the USA. His research areas include the autonomous nervous system, movement disorders and physiopathology and the genetics of Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Gomez-Esteban was a pioneer in identifying the e46K mutation of alpha-synuclein in 2004, which continues to be the best clinical model of Parkinson’s disease. His research team centres on phenotypical characterisation of genetic variants in different synuceleinpathies. He has supervised numerous theses and published over 100 articles on Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Gómez Esteban has an h- index of 25 and an i10-index of 48. He is Principal Investigator of Spanish and international projects such as the Michael J Fox Foundation and the European Commission H2020.
