The technology company Inetum and the University of Deusto awarded the Inetum Aula Tecnológica - University of Deusto Awards on 7 March to the best Bachelor's and Master's theses in the field of digital transformation and disruptive technologies. Specifically, two projects that use Artificial Intelligence to generate social impact were awarded.
The first prize, worth€1,200, was awarded to Gaizka Basterra Caño for his project ""Diseño, desarrollo e implementación de un sistema de toma de decisión sobre el riego de cultivos basado en inteligencia artificial” (Design, Development, and Implementation of an AI-based Decision-Making System for Crop Irrigation). This project aims to improve crop irrigation management through a system that uses AI to make informed decisions, helping to prevent excessive water consumption. The panel praised its strength and innovative potential, which is based on the use of climate data from the Spanish Meteorological Agency to predict rainfall and determine irrigation needs, thereby contributing to more efficient water management in agriculture.
The second prize, worth€600, was awarded to Alex Rodríguez for his project "Sistema de detección de proteínas LTP en alimentos mediante inteligencia artificial” (LTP Protein Detection System in Food Using Artificial Intelligence), which focuses on improving food safety by detecting potent allergens in plant-based foods, using AI technology to predict the presence of LTP proteins. In this case, the panel highlighted the project's contribution to food safety and public health protection, with particular emphasis on the precision and effectiveness of the proposed technological solution, which uses an optimised neural network and infrared technology to predict the presence of LTP proteins in food.
The award ceremony, held at the University of Deusto, was attended by Asier Perallos, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Deusto, and Iñaki Pérez Palacios from the People department at Inetum. Other participants included Jose Ramón Castro, Head of the Digital Energy Hub at Inetum Iberia Latam, and José Antonio Velasco Peña, General Director of Inetum Norte.
This award is part of the collaboration agreement between the University of Deusto and the technology company Inetum, through a university-business technology seminar. This initiative aims to foster young talent in the fields of Computer Engineering, Data Science, and AI. Coordinated by the training team from the People department at Inetum, this agreement facilitates the exchange of knowledge and experience between students and Inetum professionals, promoting the development of technological skills in students, who, in turn, are preparing for future labour market demands.
