Are you studying a second language? Would you like to practise your language skills with a native speaker?
At the University of Deusto there is a growing number of foreign students on international mobility programmes. Local students study two and three languages, while foreign students mostly learn Spanish. Both groups can benefit from helping each other. It is within this framework that the Tandem Programme was born.
How does it work?
Two people meet regularly to learn each other's language on the basis of reciprocity and equal collaboration: half the time you are together you speak in one language and half the time you are together you speak in the other language. Advantages: You can improve your second language skills through "actual" and "real" communication with a native speaker. In addition to the language input, the tandem partner will bring in the whole social and cultural dimension of the language you are studying.
At the University, we give you the opportunity to meet a native speaker of the language you are studying (English, French, German, Italian...). To do so, you must register by filling in the form that you will find at the Cide or Languages section on our website (see www.idiomas.deusto.es). The programme will put you in contact with each other and assign you a tutor. From then on, you and your tandem partner will work independently, arranging your meetings according to your needs and availability.
How does the tandem programme work?
Learning languages in tandem is a form of autonomous learning: you and your tandem partner choose when you would like to meet and then agree the time, place and how often to meet. The Tandem Programme at the University of Deusto:
- We will assign you a partner with whom you can practise your language skills in another language.
- We will give you some simple guidelines on how the programme works and some basic advice on how to correct speaking mistakes.
- You can contact the coordinator by email at tandem@deusto.es for any questions or problems with the functioning of the tandem programme.
