The University of Deusto wins the 7th National League of University Debate

The University of Deusto won the 7th National League of University Debate (LNDU), held at Cuenca campus, University of Castilla-La Mancha. A total of 56 teams from 33 different universities from 11 autonomous communities, as well as a Mexican guest team, took part in this competition that brought together more than 300 students and lecturers last 27, 28, 28 and 30 April. Captained by Iñaki Atxaerandio, the Deusto students Telmo Esteban, Mikel Ruiz and Pablo Argibay, from Law, Rafael Zubieta, from Computer Science, and Iratxe Ruiz, from Psychology, made up the team winning the first Prize worth 12,000 euros.

To win this prize, these students had to go through two stages: the first one was an initialdiscussion on 'Los padres pueden delegar la educación de sus hijos en el Estado?', followed by a final discussion, in which the two teams that had reached the final debated on nuclear energy as the only alternative to energy dependency in Spain. In addition, the student Mikel Ruiz came third as Best Speaker. Along with the winning team, the University of Deusto took part in this competition with another two teams.

Year after year, the issues under discussion are devoted tocurrent national and international topics. Thus, apart from the topics discussed by the Deusto winning team, other topics included: 'La ley Antitabaco invade la intimidad de las personas?' ; 'El desarrollo tecnológico aísla al ser humano?, o 'Opinión pública frente a opinión publicada: Los medios de comunicación cumplen su función social de informar?'.

Since this National League of University Debate was started seven years ago, the University of Deusto has participated in these competitions every year, and obtained the Research Award three times.
