Bilbao Campus San Sebastian Campus
The University of Deusto begins its academic activity this week with a welcome reception for international students and a welcome day for first year students.A total of 645 exchange and CIDE (Spanish courses for foreigners) undergraduate and postgraduate students from more than 40 different countries will study in Bilbao (511) and San Sebastian (137) this first semester.
In addition, 50 more international students participate in the International Virtual Campus, taking courses in a digital space designed to offer accessible and inclusive internationalisation alternatives to students from partner universities around the world.
The young people come from the following countries: Albania, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Republic of Korea, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.
More than 2,440 undergraduate students begin their degree courses this year at the two university campuses and the Vitoria campus. Classes for all courses start on 9 September and the official opening ceremony, presided over by the lehendakari of the Basque Government, Imanol Pradales, will be on 25 September.
Reception for international students in Bilbao
On 4 September, the Bilbao campus held the institutional ceremony to welcome its 511 international students. This welcome day, which took place at the Paraninfo, was attended, together with the Vice-Rector for University Community and Agenda 2030, Aitziber Irigoras, and the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Javier Arellano, the Mayor of Bilbao City Council, Juan Mari Aburto, and the Deputy for Basque, Culture and Sport of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Leixuri Arrizabalaga, as well as several consuls general and honorary consuls based in Bilbao.
The meeting ended with a lunch and the students had the opportunity to get to know the city of Bilbao hand in hand with the Deusto students who participated in the Buddy Programme, one of the most outstanding programmes in which international students are paired with local students to promote their integration and welcome. This institutional event is completed with sessions with tutors for academic orientation and with the International Relations Office and Deusto Campus on extracurricular activities.
International students in San Sebastian
On 4 September, the San Sebastian campus also celebrated the institutional welcome for its 137 students and exchange students. Xabier Riezu, Vice-Rector of the San Sebastian campus of the University of Deusto, took part in the event, which was held at the Loiola Centrum. On the same day, the Mayor of San Sebastian, Eneko Goia, received the international students in the Plenary Hall of the City Hall. The day ended with a visit to the city with the ‘great friends’.
What's new for this year
Among the novelties for this year are the Mathematical Engineering degree and the double degree in Law + Philosophy, Politics and Economics, on the Bilbao campus. The San Sebastian campus, meanwhile, offer the new degree in Business Administration and Management + Digital Business Intelligence (Deusto Business Analytics Programme).
