The University of Deusto, through the Institute of Basque Studies, launched the LanEusKal project last academic year with the aim of strengthening the commitment to the Basque language of future professionals. This initiative connects students with outstanding professionals who use Basque in their work environment and is held every semester on the Donostia and Bilbao campuses, covering different areas of knowledge.
The first meeting took place in San Sebastian, in collaboration with the faculty of the degree in Physiotherapy. Basque physiotherapists Andoni Ayerdi Olaskoaga and Borja Oreja Garralda, who work in professional soccer, shared their experience in the subject “Kirol Fisioterapia”. In their intervention, they addressed the role of physiotherapy in high performance sport and the treatment of injuries, in addition to highlighting the importance of the Basque language in their professional activity.
The second session of the LanEusKal project was held on November 4 at the Bilbao campus with third-year students of the Psychology degree. Professors Ane Miren Uribe, Nerea Cortázar Enciondo and Agurne Sampedro Calvete, coordinator of the Psychology degree, collaborated in its organization.
Under the title “Challenges for educational psychology in the daily use of Basque”, the speakers were Jaione Onaindia and Josué Martín Ugarte. The meeting addressed the current challenges in psychological assessment and treatment, highlighting the lack of adapted psychometric tests and therapeutic materials (such as games) in Basque. In addition, Josué Martín shared his experience as a professional trained in Spanish who currently treats his patients in Basque.
The LanEusKal initiative aims to promote the fact that Basque provides added value, facilitates interpersonal communication and is an indicator of service quality.
