DEUSTO Researcher and Member of the Interdisciplinary Research Platform Ageing and Wellbeing, Roberto Nuño, participated in the Health Economics Conference organised by the Academy of Medical Sciences of Bilbao on 6 March 2019 with the title “Quality and efficiency in Health, are they synonymous terms?"

The Conference was opened by Ricardo Franco Vicario, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Bilbao, and moderated by Joseba Vidorreta, Director of Quirónsalud in the Basque Country and Head of the Health Economics Section of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Bilbao. It counted with the participation of Roberto Nuño, Carlos Catalán (Medical Director of Ribera Salud Group) and Salvador Peiró (Researcher of the FISABIO Foundation)

During the event, experts shared experiences and views related to the quality and efficiency of Health Systems. “Is the private management of health organisations more efficient than the public management?” was one of the main questions discussed during the Conference. One of the key messages was the “public-private partnerships require a good public governance” and that “more of the same is not a sustainable solution. We have to innovate” as stated by DEUSTO Researcher. According to Roberto Nuño, in the current context of an ageing society and digitalisation “we have to rethink with a transforming vision our health system. (..) We have to innovate, integrate care processes, achieve a true citizens and patients’ participation, and reorient the model from the production of health services to the obtention of health results”.
