On 17 December 2020, the International Research Project Office (IRPO) of the University of Deusto organised the Webinar DEUSTO Research - Getting Ready for Horizon Europe. The event gathered more than 60 participants of the University of Deusto (on-line and in-person) interested in knowing more about the possibilities of being involved in the future EU research and innovation programme: Horizon Europe.

The event was opened by Toñi Caro (Head of DEUSTO International Research Project Office) who introduced the key ingredients of a successful research internationalisation strategy. Sean McCarthy (Hyperion) followed Toñi’s presentation and outlined the profile of successful organisations in Horizon Europe, explaining the funding landscape within Horizon Europe and highlighting the importance of strategic networking at European level.

The results of DEUSTO’s research internationalisation strategy during the period 2014-2020 have shown the strong potential of the University to further strengthen its participation in Horizon Europe. During the last 7 years, DEUSTO has presented 416 project proposals and participated in 92 international research projects (22% success rate), 41 Horizon 2020 and 23 in Coordination*.

The event represented the starting point for a further 7 years period. Horizon Europe (2021-2027) is offering numerous funding opportunities for excellent research, both for individual researchers (mainly through the Excellent Science Pillar) and for collaborative research projects (mainly through Pillar 2 - Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness). As in the past years, IRPO will keep supporting its researchers in positioning in the international research funding landscape, in developing interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaborations and impactful research, in alignment with DEUSTO’s 6i research strategy.

As follow-up to the Deusto Research Webinar, IRPO will organise in January 2021 the plenary meetings of its 5 Interdisciplinary Research Platforms to discuss the concrete opportunities for being involved in Horizon Europe.
