ivyliet.v.kessel@deusto.esAs a researcher I’ve always been interested in social issues, the way media represent them, and how its representation influences public opinion. After 9/11 it has been complicated to be a Muslim in a western country, especially in the case of women who are in a more vulnerable position. In addition media have been offering only one or two narratives about them: depicting Muslim women as the exotics belly dancers, the submissives wives, or, in the worst case, as terrorists. How the representation of Muslim women in films and fiction series produced in Spain during the XXI century has influenced the construction of the collective imagination about this minority in the country? That’s the main question my research Project attends to answer. Migration won’t stop in the world but it is mandatory to identify the problems that difficult the integration of immigrants and what is the role of media in all this. Based on the results obtained, strategies can be developed and government policies that favor integration can be established. Based on the results obtained, strategies and government policies can be developed in favor of integration, and that can lead to transforming societies into more tolerant, equal, and just.
